Set in the fictional provincial town of Brahmpur in India in the 1950s, this lyrical domestic drama tells the story of four Indian families in the years after the partition of the subcontinent into India and Pakistan. It centres on a mother's quest to find a son-in-law. The book won te 1994 Commonwealth WRiters' Prize.
